- Benjamin Banneker was an African American architect who was responsible for designing the city layout for Washington D.C.
- Hired by George Washington and recommended by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Banneker was put on the planning committee for the U.S. capital and designed the roads, parks, and major buildings in two days.
- Banneker was a self-made mathematician, astronomist, and civil rights advocate.
- He learned by borrowing old textbooks and ended up publishing an annual Farmer’s Almanac from the year 1792 to 1797. He also built a clock entirely made from wood which kept time for over 40 years.
